Me and My Obsession With Pictures…

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Yesterday, I decided to get Brook and Blake’s picture taken.  This would forever document Brook turning 4 and Blake being 6 months old.  There wasn’t an appointment available till later in the afternoon, but I was hell bent on getting it done, so I made the reservation.

Since I was going into the city, I decided to make a day out of it…This was a good/bad idea.  Note to self, do not wear your children out before getting pictures done and also do not schedule it around dinner time if you want them to be happy.

So, we started off the day by going to the Botanical Gardens called “The Domes“, because I love me some flowers and Brook has been showing an interest in gardening lately, so I thought she might dig it.  We actually had a fun time going through the man-made tropical rain forest and the sunflower exhibit…two different exhibits people…there are three domes, three exhibits…should have said that earlier.  The last dome was a desert dome which made me so desperately homesick.  It also made me chuckle, because I know that a lot of Milwaukee folk think the desert is unusual and unique and I just think of it as home.

There is a hallway that connects the Domes and we stopped in there so I could feed Blake.  Brook has been obsessed with High School Musical lately and she did a little show for all the “grandma” type ladies that were wandering around the exhibits too.  It was cute… so cute, that I feel like running out and buying a Flip Video Camcorder so I never miss those moments again.  I actually think I will soon, because I’ve been patiently waiting for one, thinking I can wait till my birthday, but in fact I feel like I’m missing out on “the moments” by waiting.

Side Note:  I think I am the last Mommy ever to realize how addicting High School Musical is for children…it’s like kid crack!

Back to the original story…

So after the Domes, we went to visit Shannon and Mom Fermanian.  Both are in town helping Nicki build a fence around her house.  It was nice catching up with my buddy and talking with “Mom”.    Blake did two new things while we were there…two new milestones.  He sat by himself unassisted for a decent amount of time…yeah Blake!  He also with assistance, practiced moving his feet and legs which almost looks like walking!  He is getting sooooooo big!  Yet another moment the Flip would have come in handy!

Then it was time for the pictures.  They were actually great during the process.  I had to buy Blake a new outfit, because he got so very dirty and full of cat hair at Nicki’s house.  It was fine though since we went to Kiddie Kandids and they are located in Babies R Us…convenient.

Okay, note to all you Mom’s who I know are smarter than this…Hell, I am smarter than this, but I really didn’t feel like driving 40 miles again to do this at a more child friendly time…DO NOT GET PICTURES TAKEN AT 5:30pm…Don’t do it…Don’t.  Brook was starving, Blake was in desperate need of a nap and the photography chick was about to lose her mind.

Another Side Note:  It is crazy hard to get two kids to look into a camera and smile at the same time…even with all the tricks…it’s almost impossible.

But, nonetheless, we got some cute shots and now this moment is documented for them to see when they are older.  My goal is to have so many pictures of them, they will be forced to remember their childhood.  If not from memory, then from the pictures and stories we tell them.  I am doing this because so much of my childhood is lost in my brain somewhere and I can’t find it.  So, other people telling me stories about me is the only way I can “remember”.

And this is why I am obsessed with taking so many pictures of them and trying to write everything down…I don’t want to forget and I don’t want them to either.

Last Side Note:  So Kiddie Kandids does something with the CD they give you that makes the photos blurry unless you buy them!!!  So, I can’t post them, cuz they look like crap!!!  Also, they let you view them online, but a non-tech-savy person can’t get them over here…here is the link for any interested.

Last / Last Side Note: Okay, maybe it wasn’t Kiddie Kandids fault.  After being amazed that they found my blog and wrote to me…oh, and because Travis (the tech dude) is back home…I figured out what I did wrong.  Without realizing it I was trying to enlarge a smaller picture which was making the picture look blurry.  I was “over-pixeling” the pictures.  I have sinced mended the problem and posted the pics.  So Kiddie Kandids does give you a CD you can use…yeah for them!

My Immune System Knows Better

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

I know, I know I am going to go out of sequence.  I should first talk about the trip Up North and then talk about how the whole Newman clan is under quarantine right now, but right now this is more important in my life.

The Newman’s are sick!

All four of us were not all there yesterday driving home.  I said, “oh it’s allergies” and I also said, “it’s because we are tired and it was so cold up there this week.”  But, no, it’s because we Newman’s decided to all get sick at the exact same time!  Oh joy of joys!

Now my immune system usually knows better and I am normally spared from the Newman illnesses that float around here.  My body typically understands that Moms are not allowed to be sick.  They can’t rest properly and usually they have to care for everyone else who come down with whatever is in the air at that time.  My body and I had an understanding…I stay healthy and in turn I am able to nurse everyone else back into health.

My body is on strike because I got sick right along with the rest of them.  This is what torture must feel like.

I am sicker than a dog and last night  I was taking care of Brook and Blake, hoping Travis is sleeping off being sick himself so then, just maybe, he can relieve me in the morning.  This is Blake’s first cold and while so far it isn’t a bad one and he doesn’t have a temperature….he is having a hard time breathing since he is stuffed up and that is just making him miserable.  Brook also is having some really wonderfully scary coughing fits in the middle of the night.  Not enough to be dangerous, but bad enough to scare me out of my bed and into her room for a once over.

Travis did indeed see me this morning when he woke up and decided maybe a little R&R might help me.  Then he gave me a drug cocktail to help get me on the road to health…I don’t think it’s working.  It is his turn to sleep right now and by god I really wish it wasn’t.  All my head wants to do is be on a pillow…It feels like it’s about 50 pounds.  Maybe it is, I ate so much on vacation, maybe it is.

Okay, well back to mending the sick so Abby can come back and help us.

Next time we will leave the viral bug in Minocqua, because lord knows I don’t want it here.

A Short But Sweet Update…

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

So, we have been busy little bees here in the Newman house, which leaves very little time to blog, but since I wanted to get some stuff written down as to not forget…here we go!

Milestones:

Blake’s two bottom teeth are coming up!  Oh and he is a drooling, crying, crazy explosion in the pants mess right now.  The only thing I do is give him as many chew toys as possible and some baby Tylenol for the discomfort.

As for the explosions…they have been so gross.  Sometimes your mind can turn off and you don’t realize that in fact your hands are elbow deep in shit, and then there are other times when you are trying to hold back your own puke because it is far too gross and smelly.  Well, lately it’s been the latter, he’s had some doozies!  Ah, it’s all part of the parenting package….itty bity baby with more crap than anyone could imagine!  I mean seriously, where do they hold it all before the explosion and it’s amazing that they still have their body weight once the filling of mulitple diapers are over.

Another thing he can now do is roll from his back to his side.  The funny thing is he likes to roll, but he doesn’t like to be on his stomach, so after the roll, he’ll scream for you to move him back to his back and then he just rolls right over again.  Sounds funny, but in reality I feel like telling him to make up his mind and stick with it!

As for Brook, well to my Mother’s happiness, I have gotten her hooked on old Hollywood musicals through instant watch on Netflix.  So far she’s watched Singing in the Rain and An American in Paris.  It is really cute to see her mimic the movie once it’s over, dancing around and being fancy.  Maybe she’ll want to be a dancer…only time will tell

Speaking of Mother

The reason why we have been so busy is that my Mom and John came to visit for a few days.  We were very busy people, going on beer tours, seeing the Chicago Symphony Orchestra play at the outdoor theater Ravinia, going on a huge shopping spree at the outlet malls, taking John fishing, eating every single Wisconsin food there is and well the best is saved for last…Tequila Fest 2009.

See, Jose and I were deeply in love when I was in college…we’d party all of the time, I loved him…then, well I got sick one too many times off of his cheep ass and well, we divorced…I have been tequila free ever since, until…

The family BBQ.

I thought it would be fun to have a BBQ for my Mom and John and invite my neighbors, my in-laws and my Shannon.  It would be a traditional Brat and Corn fest and we’d drink some Brandy Old Fashion Sweets and Mojitos.  Sounds innocent until Shannon shows up with two bottles  of very nice, very pricey tequila.  And for all who don’t know Shannon, she isn’t a drinker, so when she feels like it, I get on the bandwagon.

I should have let this bandwagon continue on…Oh my heaven!  It would have been fine if I only took one or two shots like I planned to…but, that didn’t happen, because Jose’s richer Uncles tasted so yummy that I went just an tini-tiny bit overboard.

There are pictures….lots and lots of them, but you know what?  I think I will keep them to myself this time as to not overly embarrass myself.

Let’s just say that my brief love affair with Jose’s Uncle(s) are over…I divorced them too!  One cannot be a parent and have that kind of relationship with tequila or any other form of alcohol.  Thank god Travis was somewhat responsible that night because there was no way I could take care of my children the next day.  The hangover from hell was not my idea of fun…it lasted for two and a half days!

So that’s it for now.  We are heading Up-North to the Carani Lake Cabin for a few days, so you won’t be hearing from me again for a bit…but, I’m sure I’ll have some fun stories when we get back.  TTFN!

Asiatic Lily Garden

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Right now is the hight of my asiatic lily garden.  I made a little path out of leftover stone I found and then lined that path with asiatic lilies last year…or maybe it was two years ago, can’t quite remember.  Anyway, they are all in full bloom right now and are looking mighty fine!  I love them because they are maintence free, they flower for a long time and they are easy to grow and hard to kill.  Here are a couple of pics of my lily garden.

Seriously???

So it’s not bad enough that I have poison ivy or some other allergic reaction on my face that makes me look like a crazed, contagious sicko that everyone feels the need to take two steps in the other direction, because it’s just so darn ugly and noticeable…Now a mosquito decided I needed another reason to hide indoors all day since it bit me on the same cheek that the poison ivy is doing it’s magical work on.

No amount of makeup can cover this hedious face right now.

Ahhhhh….How I love Nature!
